What you may do with the application, what you are responsible for, and what neither the publisher nor a language model can promise you.

01What these terms cover
These terms govern your use of the LaikaPDF application and of this website, both published by AstraLaika (see the legal notice). Installing or using the application means you accept them.
If you do not accept them, do not install the application, or uninstall it. There is nothing to cancel and no account to close.
02The licence you get
You are granted a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, worldwide and royalty-free right to install and use the application on the devices you control, for as long as you keep it, for any lawful purpose — private or professional.
You may not resell it, redistribute a modified version, or present it as your own work. You may not remove the notices the application prints on the documents it generates.
03The application is free
There is no purchase, no subscription and no in-app payment. Because nothing is sold, no right of withdrawal applies — there is no contract of sale to withdraw from. Downloading the language models you choose may consume mobile data, which your own operator bills you for; that is between you and them.
04Your documents are yours
The publisher acquires no right over the documents you import, scan, annotate or generate. They stay on your device and are never transmitted to us — we have no server that could receive them.
You are responsible for what you put into the application, for holding the rights to it, and for keeping your own backups. Because everything is local, uninstalling the application, clearing its data or losing the device destroys your library irretrievably. There is no copy anywhere for us to restore.
05What the AI produces
The application runs a language model on your device. Such a model generates plausible text; it does not know whether that text is true. It invents facts, references and quotations, and it does so confidently.
Summaries, answers, generated flashcards, written books and translations are therefore provided without any warranty of accuracy, completeness or fitness for a particular purpose. They are a starting point, not a result. Check them against the source before you rely on them, and never use them as the sole basis for a medical, legal, financial or otherwise consequential decision.
In line with article 50 of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 on artificial intelligence, the application marks the content it generates: books and translated documents carry a printed notice stating that a language model produced them and that it invents. You must not remove that notice from a document you pass on to someone else.
The quality of the output depends heavily on the model you install. A very small model performs poorly, and the application says so on screen at the moment it matters.
06The models you install
No model is bundled with the application. You choose one from a catalogue and it is downloaded from its author’s official repository on Hugging Face.
Each model remains governed by its own licence, granted by its author, not by us. Those terms bind you directly, and some of them restrict what you may do with the output. The open source licences page lists every model with its licence; the application also shows the licence before you download. It is your responsibility to read it and to comply with it.
The publisher provides no warranty on models it did not write, and is not responsible for their availability: an author may withdraw or change a repository at any time.
07Research papers and web search
The paper search queries arXiv and OpenAlex, and downloads files hosted by their publishers. Those documents remain subject to their own licences, which differ from one paper to the next. The application says so before the download; check the record before you reuse a paper.
Web search is disabled when the application is installed. If you enable it, a short query is sent to DuckDuckGo, whose own terms and privacy policy then apply to that request. Results come from third parties and are neither verified nor endorsed by us.
08Acceptable use
You agree not to use the application to:
- infringe the rights of others, including copyright in the documents you process
- produce or distribute unlawful content
- circumvent a technical protection measure on a document
- breach the licence of a model you installed
Because the application runs entirely on your device and reports nothing, we have no way to observe, moderate or prevent any of this. That makes it your responsibility rather than ours, which is exactly the trade the offline design makes.
09Availability and changes
The application is provided as it is, at a given moment. New versions may add, alter or remove features. Since it runs locally, a version you have installed keeps working whether or not it is still distributed.
These terms may change. The date at the top of this page will change with them, and a change that affects what the application does with the network will be reflected in the privacy policy before the version concerned is published.
10Warranty and liability
The application is supplied free of charge and without warranty of any kind, to the fullest extent permitted by law. In particular, the publisher does not warrant that it will be free of defects, that it will suit a particular purpose, or that the content the AI produces will be accurate.
The publisher’s liability is limited to direct damage that is a foreseeable consequence of its own fault. It cannot be held liable for loss of data resulting from an uninstall, a device failure or an absence of backups on your part, nor for the consequences of a decision taken on the basis of unverified AI output.
None of the above limits your statutory rights. If you are a consumer in the European Union, the legal guarantee of conformity and liability for hidden defects apply as a matter of law, and nothing in these terms may exclude the publisher’s liability for death, personal injury, gross negligence or wilful misconduct. A clause that purported to do so would simply be void, and the rest of these terms would stand.
11Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by French law. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere in the European Union, you keep the protection of the mandatory provisions of the law of your country of residence, and you may bring proceedings before the courts of that country.
In the event of a dispute, please write to us first — most matters are settled that way. If they are not, consumers resident in the European Union may use the online dispute resolution platform provided by the European Commission.
